Direct traffic
Visits that arrive with no referrer. Someone typed the address or used a bookmark, or followed a link from somewhere that passes no referrer, such as an email client, a PDF or many mobile apps.
In Vireo
Vireo counts a visit as Direct when it has no referrer at all. Direct is one of the six groups in Where visitors come from.
A large Direct share usually means links from apps and email, because those visits can't be traced to anywhere else.
Direct means no referrer
Analytics tools call a visit direct when it arrives with no referrer. The textbook case is someone typing your address or using a bookmark, but on most sites that's a minority of direct visits.
The rest are links followed from places that don't pass a referrer. Most email clients, PDFs and documents, and many mobile apps open links without one. Messaging apps, where people share links privately, are a large part of it, which is why it's sometimes called dark social. Some browsers and privacy extensions strip referrers too.
How Vireo groups it
Where visitors come from on the Overview puts every visit in one of six groups: Direct, Search, AI assistants, Social, Email and Other sites. A visit is Direct when it has no referrer at all.
Search engines that hide the search query still pass their own name, so those visits land in Search, not Direct. Common Android apps such as Gmail, LinkedIn, Reddit, Slack and Telegram pass an app address, and Vireo shows them by name, so not all app traffic is lost.
Set the Source filter to Direct and the totals and What changed narrow to those visits, which shows which pages people reach without a traceable link.
Making it smaller
Tag the links you control. A newsletter link with utm_source and utm_campaign still arrives with no referrer, but Vireo Pro reports it as its own campaign, taken from the first page of the visit. The free plugin counts tagged visits under their referrer, which for an email is Direct.
Links in AI assistant apps often arrive without a referrer too, so a growing Direct share can mean assistants are sending readers you can't see by name.
Pitfalls
A sudden jump in Direct is worth checking against the bot line. Vireo keeps known bots out, but a new headless scraper that runs JavaScript, with a browser-like user agent and no referrer, would look like a direct visitor until it's recognised. The daily cap of 5 views per page and 50 in total per visitor limits how far one can push the numbers.
