Switch from Post Views Counter

Post Views Counter counts views of each post and keeps the counts in its own table in your WordPress database. Vireo has no importer for it, so its counts stay in that table, and Vireo's counts start on the day you install it.

How it works
There's no Post Views Counter importer. Vireo counts from the day you install it.
Cost
Free. Vireo Analytics is free on WordPress.org.

What carries over

  • Your Google Analytics 4 history, if the site also ran GA4, through the Google Analytics importer
  • Google searches from the last 90 days, once you connect Search Console

What doesn't

  • Post Views Counter's view counts. A post that showed 5,000 views starts again from the day Vireo was installed.
  • View counts shown on your posts by its shortcode or settings. Replace them with the Post views block or shortcode, which show Vireo's count.

What you get with Vireo

  • Site-wide numbers, not only views per post: visitors, referrers, countries, devices, time on page and bounce rate
  • The Google searches behind each post, from Search Console, on that post's stats screen
  • What AI crawlers take from your site, next to the readers AI assistants send back
  • Bots kept out of the numbers and listed by category, so you can see what was filtered
  • Counting without cookies on visitors' devices

What you give up

  • Your old view counts, unless you leave Post Views Counter's table in the database
  • An all-time count that includes years before Vireo, on posts that were already popular

What you need

  • A plan for the old view counts, because Post Views Counter can delete them when it's deactivated

Steps

  1. Install Vireo Analytics from WordPress.org on the same site. It starts counting from that day. Post Views Counter can keep running alongside it while you compare the two.
  2. In Post Views Counter's settings, check that "Delete on Deactivation" is off if you want to keep its counts in the database.
  3. Swap any view counts shown on your posts for Vireo's Post views block or [vireo_views] shortcode, and any most-viewed lists for the Popular posts block.
  4. If the site ran GA4, import that history. In WordPress, go to Vireo Analytics, then Settings, then the Import & export tab. Choose Google Analytics and follow the Google Analytics guide.
  5. Deactivate Post Views Counter.

Before you start

  • Lists ordered by views will reshuffle at first, because Vireo's counts start from zero.
  • Expect different counts for the same post. Post Views Counter counts a visitor once per interval it lets you set, and Vireo counts every view a person sees, up to 5 views of one page per visitor a day.
