Top countries
The Top countries card on the Overview switches between a Map and a Table. The map shades every country that sent visitors in the range; the table lists the top ten with their change on the previous period.
Pick a country in the Country filter to narrow the totals, Where visitors come from and What changed to it.
How the country is found
Vireo looks up the country on your server while it records the view, then keeps only the country. It uses, in order:
- A country your host or CDN already passes to WordPress. Cloudflare, AWS CloudFront and the nginx GeoIP module are among those it reads.
- A local country database, if you’ve installed one.
Without either, every visitor is recorded as unknown. Your traffic is still counted, and the card says “Countries are not being resolved” with a “Set it up” link.
Install the country database
Go to Vireo Analytics, Settings, Tracking, Geo-location. The Countries row shows Resolving, Installed or Not resolving.
If it says Not resolving, click “Download country database”. It’s free, needs no account, and is installed for you. The data is DB-IP’s Lite country database (CC BY 4.0).
If you’d rather use MaxMind GeoLite2, open “Prefer MaxMind GeoLite2? (manual)” for the steps. MaxMind requires an account and doesn’t allow automatic downloads, so you upload the GeoLite2-Country.mmdb file yourself to the folder the screen names.
Countries are filled in from the day a source is in place. Earlier visits stay unknown.
Excluded countries
Some sites get floods of automated traffic from one country that doesn’t announce itself as a bot. Under Settings, Tracking, Geo-location, “Excluded countries” takes two-letter country codes, one per line. Traffic from those countries is discarded instead of counted, the same as an excluded IP address.
It needs a country source and only works from the moment you save it. To clear what was already counted from the countries report, click “Remove stored data for” and the codes you listed. Pageview and visitor totals keep those visits, because nothing else records which country a visit came from.
Technology
The Technology card shows Device types (mobile, desktop, tablet), Browsers and Operating systems for the range, by visitors.
Pick a device in the Device filter to narrow the totals, Where visitors come from and What changed to it.

City and region breakdowns are part of Vireo Pro.
