Settings reference

Every setting on Vireo's five Settings tabs, what it does and its default, with links to the pages that explain each one in full.

On this page

Go to Vireo Analytics, Settings. Only administrators can open it. The settings are on five tabs, and the tab you’re on is kept in the address.

On the General, Tracking and Email digest tabs, click “Save settings” at the foot of the tab after changing anything.

General

Setting What it does Default
Do not count A tick box for every role on the site. Visits from logged-in people with a ticked role are left out of every report. See Excluding traffic. Administrator ticked
Toolbar “Show today’s pageviews in the admin toolbar.” On
Data retention How long daily totals are kept: 90 days, 180 days, 1 year, 2 years, 5 years or Never purge. Older rows are deleted by a daily job. The screen shows how much space the analytics tables use. 2 years
Roles with access Which roles besides Administrator can read the dashboard. See Who can see the numbers. Administrator only

A developer can decide per user whether the toolbar item shows with the vireo_show_admin_bar filter.

Tracking

Section Settings Read more
Headless front end “Front-end site address”, then the tag to add to the front end Headless front ends
Exclusions “Excluded IPs / CIDR” and “Excluded paths” Excluding traffic
Blocked referrers “Blocked hosts”: one host per line, subdomains included. Remove a line to unblock it. Referrers and sources
Geo-location Countries (status and “Download country database”), “Shorten IP addresses” (off by default, see Privacy), “Excluded countries” Countries and devices
Auto-events File downloads, Form submissions, Email links, Phone links, Outbound links, all off by default Events and broken links
Connected sites “Site name”, “Site address” and “Connect site” Connected sites
Bot filter test Paste a user agent and click “Test User-Agent” Bot filtering

“Excluded paths” starts with /wp-admin/* and /wp-login.php.

Known referrer spam is blocked already. “Blocked hosts” lists the ones you added with “Block this referrer” on a row in Where visitors come from. Blocking stops counting from then on and hides earlier rows from the reports; nothing is deleted.

With Vireo Pro, Geo-location also has a City database row.

Email digest

Setting What it does Default
Enable “Send the digest” Off
Frequency Daily, Weekly or Monthly. Daily goes out each morning with the day before, monthly on the first with the month before. Weekly
Recipients One address per line. Blank sends to the site’s admin email. Blank
When The Hour it’s sent, in your site’s timezone, and for Weekly the Day Monday, 09:00

Under Test email, “Send test email” sends the digest to your own address now. See Email digest.

Search Console & API

  • Search Console: “Service account key (JSON)”, “Property”, “Save Search Console settings”, and once connected, “Fetch the last 90 days” and “Disconnect”. See Search Console.
  • PageSpeed Insights: “Google API key (optional)”, “Save API key” and “Remove API key”. See Page speed.
  • REST API: your site’s base address for the API. Open “Endpoints and an example request” for the list of routes. See Pull your stats with the REST API.
  • Connect an AI assistant: your “MCP endpoint”, a link to create an application password, and ready-made setup for Claude Code and for Claude Desktop, Cursor and others. See Connect Claude or Cursor to your site.

With Vireo Pro, the top of the Settings screen also has a “Freemius revenue tracking” card.

Import & export

  • Import data: the sources Vireo can import from. See Importing your history.
  • Backup and restore: “Download backup” saves everything Vireo has recorded for this site as one file. “Restore from a backup” loads a file on another install, or back onto this one, and asks whether to Merge or Replace. Settings and connected sites aren’t in the file. See Backup and restore.
  • Export CSV: pick a Start and End date and a Type (Site totals, Pages, Referrers, Countries, Devices, Broken links or Events), then click “Download CSV”. The range starts as the last 30 days. The file streams straight from your server to your browser.
    • Site totals has a row per day with bounce_rate_percent, avg_time_on_page_seconds and timed_views beside pageviews and visitors. Pages has avg_time_on_page_seconds and timed_views for each page. Where nothing was measured, including on imported days, the bounce and time columns are empty and timed_views is 0.
