Multisite and MainWP

How Vireo works on a WordPress network, the network-wide Analytics screen, and what a MainWP dashboard can read from a site.

On this page

Multisite

Network-activate Vireo Analytics to set it up on every site in the network. Sites created later are set up when they’re created. Each site keeps its own data and has its own Vireo Analytics menu and settings.

On a large network, activation sets up the first 200 sites straight away, so it doesn’t time out. Each of the rest sets itself up the first time one of its pages loads. A developer can raise or lower the number with the vireo_network_activation_limit filter.

The network screen

Network admins get an Analytics menu in the network admin. “Analytics across the network” lists every site with its Visitors and Pageviews, and an Open link to that site’s dashboard. Totals are cached for fifteen minutes; click Refresh for fresh ones.

A very large network shows the first sites that fit on one page and says how many it left out.

Uninstalling on a network

Deleting the plugin removes its data from every site in the network. See the FAQ.

MainWP

If a site is connected to a MainWP dashboard through MainWP Child, that dashboard can read the site’s numbers over MainWP’s own signed connection:

  • On each sync, the visitor and pageview totals, top pages and top referrers for the last 7 and 30 days.
  • With Vireo Pro on the dashboard, any of Vireo’s read-only reports when someone asks for one, such as a chart, a date range or one post’s stats. That’s how an AI assistant connected to the dashboard answers about this site. This needs Vireo Analytics 0.12.4 or later on the site.

Only read-only reports are available, and they run as the user MainWP connects with, who needs access to Vireo’s dashboard. Nothing about individual visitors is shared, and nothing about this site’s own connected sites is passed up. The MainWP dashboard already has administrator access to the site.

To switch it off on a site, add this to its theme’s functions.php or a small plugin:

add_filter( 'vireo_mainwp_enabled', '__return_false' );

With Vireo Pro on the MainWP dashboard, you also get a Vireo widget, a Vireo page for each child, Pro Reports tokens, and an AI assistant that can answer about every child. See With a MainWP dashboard.
